Moral Capacity
People like you enjoy
Looking down your noses at people like me
On your way to your multimillion dollar churches
Tithing your way to false piety
But if height were dependent
Upon moral capacity
You might find yourselves
A little short-statured and
Staring scathingly at my knees
I’m not suggesting I’m better than you
Merely that beliefs have blinded you to truth
Because we’re all in this together
Standing on this rock
Spinning around this star
Screaming around this black hole
Dancing through this universe
So any petty grumblings
About who is better than whom
Becomes the proverbial prick waving contest
Sure, some are more impressive than others
But they all have the capacity
To rape or create or
Piss all over the neighbor’s front lawn
To suggest a being can’t be moral
Without belief in god
Is to relegate yourself to the level of dumb beast
But what would you call a thing that in one breath
Calls to abolish abortion while hailing the death penalty?
And if god helps those who help themselves
Then Selfishness is divinity
But if you think about it twice
That perfectly describes
This nation from sea to shining sea
There is an inverse relationship
Between faith in god and faith in man
The logical progression of
“In god all things are possible”
Is “Without god, nothing is possible”
But if god exists
It must be of the same origin as me
It would be just another creature
Made of coagulated energy
So you can keep your faith in god
I’ll keep my faith in man
And at the end of the day
We’ll see who pulls through
